Valley Meet Saturday August 14th 2004 6:00 pm
(The meet itself was your usual meet. We parked, looked at each others cars a bit, chatted about how Super Sequential BOV's kill turbos and then ate dinner.)

Post Meet Story by Nam Tran
It was a very tiring night. I'm sure some of you who were there are probably wondering what all happened.

Jeff (the dude on the motorcycle) went hot into that first turn. He ended up about 50 feet down the slope. His bike was about 80 feet down. Apparently a shoe had come off during his slide. He tried to use his cell phone to call for help, but he had no reception. He slid down the hill a little trying to get signal. By the time I got there, Ian's passenger was already down. He made it all the way to the bike to turn it off and grab the keys then proceeded to climb back up to Jeff. I jumped in too. The entry was probably at a 60 degree angle to vertical. I slid for a good 20 feet, ripping my pants in the process and holding my polo shirt in the air to keep it clean (since it was going to be used
to stop the bleeding). In the fall, Jeff suffered a compound fracture in his lower Tib/Fib as well as some minor abrasion on his back. He also complained of a painful wedgie and that the Firefighters' straps around his legs also caught his balls. To my knowledge, he never went unconscious. He was in stable condition but it took about two hours from the time he went off until the time his medic truck finally left the scene.

As an update, Jeff will be fine but it appears he will be in for a long recovery.

Valley Meet Saturday December 6th 4:00 pm
Story by Joshua West
Thanks to everyone that showed for the valley meet. For you that have come to other events, but missed this one. Both Scot and Roy were at the same meet at the same time! Yep ROYZGSX was cruz'n the valley. Congrats to Adam for having his car up and running as well:-) And as much as Joe has issues, to the same degree he is cool to hang out with. 10+ cars made the trek across the valley to the scales, then headed on to other late night activities.

Santa Barbara Meet Sunday November 16th 2003
Story by Matt
Thanks guys for coming out. Sorry it wasn't as organized as it
should have been, but I hope you had a good time anyway. The day
turned out to be nice (I thought it was going to rain) and there
were more cars than I expected.

Anyway, thanks for coming and it was good to meet some of you
finally.

Sport Compact Car - Ultimate Street Car Challenge 2003
September 23 - 26, 2003
(Skip story and go to pictures and videos.)
This was actually a closed event so most of the story will have to be told by Scot and Roy, the DSM community representatives in this year's competition. I can't speak directly for the two great competitors about how this event went down from start to finish, but I got to be there the for the day of testing that took place at California Speedway. For those who are interested, here is my story.

Things were scheduled to begin sometime early in the morning, like 8 a.m. Normally I would ask you not to wake me that early on my day off unless Jesus Christ himself is standing near me. But my presence was needed so I rolled out of bed in time to get myself up, dressed and to the shop (RRE) to meet Scot Gray - owner of the car that I have long called the pinnacle of all that is a 1G DSM - to do some last minute packing up. Packing included the wheelchair that would be used by John Mueller to get around in when he was not driving on the road course that day.

We finished packing and headed out to Fontana, arriving just a few minutes before events were scheduled to begin. About an hour or so later, Josh Jacquot and Dave Coleman begin rounding everyone for the mandatory drivers meeting. I wheeled John over and we brushed by something on the way eliciting an obligatory off color remark from Jacquot. Never missing a beat, John responded, "Give me a break, my wheelchair is pushing a little." Everybody got a good laugh and the other guys must have been wondering who the hell is the guy in the Underdog shirt in that wheelchair, and what could he possible need to know from the driver's meeting?

Then we were told that half the cars would be going to the skip pad for the G-force test and the other half would get 10 minutes practice on the track. Then the two groups would switch. Then the groups would be re-united to complete the road course portion of the competition. Scot's car was sent off to the skid pad and Roy's car was off to the road course for it's first attempt at turning - ever. All seemed to be going well thus far.

So John was up first for practice with some cock waving Supra owner. Supra owner dude says something to John along the lines of, "Are you going out behind me?" To which John replied, "Yes." "Good," Supra owner retorts, "I want to see if you can catch me in the 10 minutes." Little did he know that is was John's plan not to lead anyone through his line on the track. Out they go, following some Porsche that was supposed to show them the track and then pull off. After about a half a lap, Roy's coolant recovery bottle gave up the ghost and was instantly run over - by John. Fuck. We later found out that John knew he ran over something and wondered what poor guy had shacked a part off his car already.

As you might expect, Roy's car began to overheat pretty quickly after loosing the coolant recovery bottle so John pulled back in after only a few laps - only to find out the Jacquot had been trying to flag him in since the bottle was first lost. Oh well. With only a lap or so of practice it was back to the garage with Roy's car to reattach the coolant recovery bottle and quickly head off to the skid pad.

Soon, Scot had returned from the skid pad and reported that his car had pulled 1.0G on the skid pad! Wait, I think that bears repeating and clarification, a 1G DSM pulled 1.0G on the skid pad. Now it was time for Scot's car to head to the road course. Even though I drive a disco pimp 2G, I was secretly hoping that Scot's car, a super sleeper 1G, would beat Roy's car on the road course - but only by a tenth of a second or so.

Again, John maneuvers from his wheelchair to a car. He heads out hoping to get a real practice. Once again he comes back in after only one lap. Before he has even removed his helmet he is saying, "No boost." Fuck. Back the garage with Scot's car.

Honda Robert, Dominick Diantonio, Chris Shields, and Scot gang-banged Scot's car and had the donor turbo off in 20 minutes and then had Scot's car newly turbo'ed and running in about 45 minutes. Class act. Very impressive.

Soon ROYZGSX was back from the skid pad where it pulled 1.07 G on the skid pad. A 2G and a car that was originally built as a dragster. It did not matter to me that the DSM's did not beat every other car for this test. I thought it was an accomplishment in itself to pull off these amazing results.

Sooner than we were ready it was time for the road course competition. With very little practice John again strapped on ROYZGSX. He had spoken to Jacquot and Coleman to see if his 5 times laps had to be consecutive, or if they could be run at 2 different times so he was only planning on running a warm up lap and a full speed lap for time and then coming back in to let the car cool off. John headed out to execute his evil plan and, much to our dismay, he accidentally shortcut the course. Those laps would not be timed but would count against the 5 laps allowed. Fuck.

No time to dwell on such things however. Roy's car would get one chance on the road course. It was time to get into Scot's car and do DSM's proud. (I should note that in between the time that Roy's car came off the track and Scot's car went on the track the Skyline blew up like a bomb and oiled the track down nicely. They put some nice white powder over the oil stripe though.) So out on the track again, the warm up lap went fine and the Black Knight comes screaming up the front straightway. I highly recommend checking out the video of this lap. This first 15 to 20 seconds in particular are some of my favorite video of all time. Mere words cannot describe the sight and sound of Scot's car going down the front straightaway. Even the video does not really do it justice.

Sadly, Scot's car was hungry that day and ate turbo number 2 before the lap could be completed. Fuck.

Once again, there was no time to dwell on such things. John had a short rest before it was time to get into Roy's car again. Last chance. DSM honor on the line. No more donor turbos. No one left to to compete - or so we thought. No pressure. Yeah right.

It has since been called the lap of the Gods. I won't even try to explain how amazing it was. Do yourself a favor and just watch it.

As soon as John finished the lap, I ran down to meet him. He stayed out for a full cool off lap so I decided to go see Jacquot and Coleman to see what his lap time was. I knew only a few of the other lap times at that point and they were all in the low 1:20's. Two other guys that I didn't know jokingly told me, "It was a 1:43." Now I wasn't sure that John had run the fastest lap of the day, but I knew it was better than that. I was shown the notebook. A 1:16 something. I didn't care what. I knew John had done what he wanted to.

So I went to take the wheelchair over to the car to pick up the hero. It was so thrilling. I think everyone was blown away. A DSM, a 2G, a drag car had just turned one of the most amazing laps anyone had ever seen. Of course, the media guys were right there to interview Roy and John. I think we were all pretty much grinning form ear to ear.

No time to celebrate though, back to the garage to pack up and prepare to head over to the drag strip. While we were packing up we heard another car on the road course. This was no big deal to us because we had really done all we could for that day on the road course. A few guys from the DSM crew went over to check it out. Apparently the Viper guy had decided that he too had a lap left on the road course.

I won't lie. The supercharged Viper sounded unholy going down the front straight. Too bad the guy parked every time he came to any kind of a curve. I guess he didn't realize how long it would take to complete a lap in this fashion. He finished his hot lap while pumping his fist out the window as if to say, "Whoohooo, I spent $200,000 and I couldn't even beat a DSM that only had a turbo for half of its lap!" Okay, I doubt he was thinking that. I am guessing he thought he had run the fastest lap of the day, right up until he sauntered up to Jacquot and Coleman to inquire who had won the road course event. Dejectedly Jacquot informed those present, "the fuckin' DSM."

Roy's car was now leaving nice pools of oil wherever it went after having lifted its head on the dyno. Scot's car had satisfied its appetite by eating two turbos and there were three events left: acceleration, braking, and gross display of horsepower. Since Scot's car was down to about 90 hp I don't think you need to spell out the rest of his day. I can only hope that Scot's car will get the chance to return just one more time - and have all its demons exorcised by then. Even though Roy's car was limping, down to about 15psi, and he bogged his launch he still got a second place finish on the drag strip.

Little did we know what John's first place finish on the road course and Roy's second place finish on the drag strip would lead to. Note the obvious foreshadowing. Anyway, the last memorable thing that happened before we left California Speedway that was the Skyline's gross display of lack of horsepower. Already on its trailer and ready to go home, the Skyline reappeared briefly in the gross display of horsepower, it's tow vehicle driving it around in slow circles while the owner stripped on the hood of the truck. Gross display indeed.

Finally, we all headed off to dinner - a Sport Compact Car sponsored dinner at Dave and Buster's. We ate, drank, and waited to see whom all the little trophies would be given to. I knew where one of them was going and didn't really think too much about the rest.

The awards finally started. There was cheering and general good vibrations throughout all the awards given. Many awards included some token, small in comparison to the investments that had been made getting everyone to that dinner in the first place, and a little glass trophy. When Jacquot finally got around to announcing who had won third place overall, I was nervous for a moment. Then I was disappointed because it was not Scot and it was not Roy. I thought that might be our only chance at an overall trophy. Then he announced second place overall. ROYZGSX. ROYZGSX? ROYZGSX!!!!!

We finally got an answer to that age-old question, how many DSM's does it take to run a representative lap on a road course. To get a second place finish, in a competition like that, with all the money and time that had been invested by all the participants, was nothing short of a miracle. DSM's, once again, ruled the day.

Valley Meet Friday February 28th 2003
Story by Glenn -
Mark
Just wanted to say thanks for the jump on my car tonight. I also appreciated you chasing me down to let me know that the coolant was leaking. The whole cooling system has been replaced, but the fans on the radiator are not coming on. I think I was at about 240º at that gas station. When I finally got the car moving and the air going to the radiator, it came back down. Think I was running at about 150º to 160º on the way home. Gonna have to get a battery for the car soon, and also look at putting a manual switch for the radiator fans. After that, you might have to take it for a ride again sometime.

Vlad
As soon as I get the pictures on my site, I will send you a link to download.

And to everyone else that showed up tonight, thanks for the fun time. Me and my friend Joey enjoyed being there tonight. Too bad we couldn't go for a canyon run this time, but will be looking forward to the next time we all get together and hope we can go for a run soon. Hope you all have a good one.

Valley Meet Saturday February 15th 2003
The night's events as told by Eddie S. -
Eric came all the way up from Sandy Eagen, Mark, James, Ian, Scott T, and and -- dude, what was your name? Neways, we were almost 25 strong.taking the entire upper floor and having a good ol' time. I think everyone was craving a little canyon carving. Eric tried calling you. I guess it would be polite to say we hope you're OK and nothing serious is wrong.
A good time was had by all (hell, I registered .005 on my BAC analyzer! Good ass porter beer!). I hope we can get another one together again where we can go for a cruise afterwards. Thanks to all for making this a good meet.

Check out some pictures and video from the day here.

RRE Meet Saturday September 15th 2001
I'd like to say that this meet went off without a hitch but, those who were there know better. Mike Welch graciously hosted this meet at Road Race Engineering. We quickly filled up the cul-de-sac at 13022 La Dana Ct. and attracted to local PD. Our first encounter with our friendly officer was him telling us that we were all illegally parked and that he would be back in 10 minutes to tow us all if we didn't move our cars and park them parallel to the curb. We moved our cars and continued our meet. Jeff Michael and Eleanor were the grill masters of the day. Bill towed in a rally car for everyone to drool over. Things were going quite well until the Honda boys showed up. The short story is, they had a full drag Honda and wanted some action. Scot Gray was ready to defend our DSM honor. They headed off to see who would be crowned the fastest car of the day. The drag Honda not only lost but also blew up his car. Then he proceeded to lead the local PD back to Road Race and once again we were given ten minutes. This time however, the ten minutes was the time allotted to clear out! The remainder of the meet was carried out at Speedzone where the following people received the following awards:

  • Fausto - Most Ricey
  • Paul - Most Crunched DSM - off the road
  • Jerry - Most Crunched DSM - still on the road
  • Nate - Slowest Timeslip
  • Roy - Fastest Timeslip
  • Bill - Best Rally Car
